Tools For Meditation

What is meditation? Meditation is defined as a mental discipline when someone concentrates and focuses to think beyond the normal mind into a deeper state of relaxation. To get to that state, it is important to be sitting comfortably. Creating that comfortable and unique place of ease has never been simpler with the use of the meditation tools that are available today. These pieces will not only get you to that state of relaxation quickly, they will help your body be able to let go of all of the stresses that you normally hold onto and allow you to meditate properly.

There are a number of tools that are used and I will explain each one to you and how you can benefit from using them in your meditation practices. Understanding what these tools are and how they are used is important for someone serious about meditation.

One of the most widely used meditation tools is the Zabuton Mat. This mat is usually about two and a half feet square and three inches thick. When sitting on this mat, it cushions your ankles and legs during meditation and is comfortable for hard or cold surfaces. The beauty of this mat is that it is small enough to take anywhere, even on vacation so your meditation practice can continue.

Used in conjunction with the Zabuton Mat is the Zafu Crescent Meditation Cushion. The Zafu Crescent is usually about 16 inches wide, 11 inches deep and 7 inches high and has a unique ergonomic design that provides spine alignment for a comfortable and deeper meditation. It is filled with a buckwheat hull so that it conforms to your body. This cushion also comes in what is called a Zafu Round, which essentially does the same thing by giving the body the support it needs so you can meditate comfortably, it's just a round shape instead of a crescent shape. The Zafu Round is generally about 13 inches around and 7 inches high. Choose whatever is most comfortable for you.

Another tool that is used often in meditating is The Bamboo Meditation Bench. Made of earth-friendly bamboo, it provides a comfortable alternative for people who have difficulty sitting crossed legged during meditation. The bench helps reduce knee, leg, ankle and back stress with effortless spine alignment. The bottom of the legs have a special curve that allows you to adjust spine and pelvic alignment easily.
